The location
Geographical location Centrally located in the Salzach Valley at altitudes of 547 to 1250 metres, Bischofshofen lies surrounded by the Hochkönig, Hochgründeck and the Tennen Range. The area within the town limits is 4,961 hectares. Economic location Bischofshofen is often described as the cradle of the Pongau. This is because since time immemorial the community area of today has been an important settlement, mining and trading centre. The community has existed since circa A.D. 700 and was raised to the status of a market community in 1900. Bischofshofen has developed into a central economic location and cultural centre in the last 100 years. This positive development was decisive for the market community of Bischofshofen being raised to the status of a town in 2000. The number of inhabitants is around 10,000. There are approximately 450 firms in and around Bischofshofen.
