The Zell basin is surrounded in a unique way by various geological mountain-range formations, the Limestone Alps to the north, with the Hochkönig, and the Eastern Alps to the south with the Kitzsteinhorn and the Grossglockner, as well as the slate ranges to the west and the east.
Quality of life and recreation Culture, nature and sport mark the image of Zell am See. For example: there is 130km of excellently prepared runs and 55 lift facilities for total winter pleasure in the Zell am See/Kaprun Europa Sport Region. But summer visitors are also well served. The Zell Lake is an inviting attraction for bathing, diving, surfing and sailing. Hikers and cyclists, golfers and tennis players also find ideal conditions.
Economic location The community was founded around A.D. 740, and in 1357 Zell am See was raised to the status of a market community, and raised to the status of a town in 1928.
